It is mainly used as a water treatment agent, as well as a mordant, catalyst, chlorinating agent, and in the manufacture of other iron salts. It is mainly used for water purification and is also used in printing and plate making, pigments, dyes, and pharmaceuticals
The main use is as a water purifier for drinking water and a precipitant for treating and purifying wastewater. The printing and dyeing industry uses it as an oxidant and mordant for indigo dyeing. Catalysts for organic synthesis of dichloroethane and other products. Chloride leaching agents for silver and copper mines. Etching agents for photography and printing plate making. Raw materials for manufacturing iron salts such as iron phosphate, pharmaceuticals, pigments, and inks. Infiltration of its solution into building concrete can increase the strength, corrosion resistance, and prevent water seepage of the building. Used for the production of electronic industry circuit boards and fluorescent digital tubes. The coagulant used in the recovery of glycerol from soap production waste liquid.

It can bind with β - globulin in milk to form protein iron, which is easily absorbed in the body. Due to its strong acidity, it is not suitable to add it directly. It is usually added after reacting with whey to make whey iron, and adjusted to 1g whey iron, which contains about 4mg of iron. The amount of whey iron added in the above-mentioned foods is 1.0% to 1.5%.
Iron generally promotes the oxidation of fats in food. Whey iron bound to proteins does not promote oxidation.
